I know, 10 pounds in a week isn’t very sexy. It’s not like the ads that claim 40 pounds in a week or melt fat away while you sleep. But it’s a significant amount, and it got me on track to meet my short-term goal weight. More on that in a minute. Before you get much further, I should warn you this is also not one of those eat one thing for a week and lose weight plans. Unless it’s ice cream, I couldn’t do one of those.

About 20 years ago, I had just started my last job and needed to get in shape. The stress and time involved in looking for a job while holding one down had caused me to forego my fitness routine. But, back then, I was a runner and could go from out of shape to in shape in a week or two.

So, one day after my morning run, I walked into the office and was met by a trio of coworkers who sat near the front door. The leader of the pack, I’ll call her Vee because that’s her name, had a pad and pen in her hand and spoke first.

“We want to know how you lost weight that quickly.”

I didn’t really give it any thought and replied, “Diet and exercise.”

All three looked shocked, and Vee threw her pad down on the desk. “Well, if you don’t want to tell us, just say so!”
