Bookjacket, Dude, Where’s My Country

It was early morning, and the line was around the block, just a few steps from the Santa Fe Plaza. It was 2004, and hundreds of the inquisitive, educated, and informed waited for their moment to meet the author and obtain a signed, first edition hard copy of Dude, Where’s My Country?

I was among them. Clad in a shiny pink skirt that flowed in the breeze and a white, see-through, off-the-shoulder blouse, I excitedly passed the time, noting who was there. Lisa Law, of Flashing On The Sixties fame, was among us, probably taking photos of the famous activist. My friend, Julie, noted how enterprising Lisa always was. Michael’s wife floated past us in her goddess-wear dress, the style in those days.

At the time, this was small town America, with more than a touch of artistry and hippiedom, a place where Mr. Moore, with his anti-gun and pro-democracy rhetoric, definitely fit in, in what would later become the most liberal-voting state in the nation, New Mexico.

I reached the front of the line and could hear a quiet commotion at the back of the bookstore, where fans were approaching the table with stacks of red and yellow books. Mr. Moore was patient, having obviously been there for hours.
