How Much Do You Need To Leave Your Job?

The Advice I Read on the Internet Often Makes Me Facepalm

These days everyone seems very opinionated on how long you should stay in your job before leaving it.

Often, you’ll hear advice like, ‘You need 9, 12, or even 24 months of savings.'

I remember reading these numbers as someone who was crying almost every night at her previous job and having “Sunday scaries” as a weekend routine like the church, and feeling so defeated.

Not everyone has the time and enough mental sanity to keep a job for that long while saving such amounts.

Some jobs steal your life force.

Instead of building your fire (as most people out there preach), they make you freeze from the dread. I know it because I’ve been there. I was in a job I hated, but was so overworked that I didn’t have the strength to apply for a gazillion jobs.

In fact, I have often found that staying at a job for long after you have started accusing the first symptoms of discomfort being less productive than leaving it even if you don’t have another lined-up.

Of course you need to use your best judgement.
