How Much Should You Believe in God?
Let’s see what the healthy limit is
A few days ago, I saw a post on Instagram about a survey about what percentage of young people from a particular country think it’s their moral responsibility to take care of their elderly parents. Not to my surprise, western countries had a very low percentage of young people saying yes to it. One person in the comment section even said that it’s not his moral responsibility to take care of his parents because he didn’t ask them to give birth to him. I tried to have a little debate with him, but he was trying to justify his point, and I then left the debate because I realised it was futile. He said he was not going to change his lifestyle for his parents and that they have well-established old-age homes in his country. He was from Spain.
This whole scenario made me think about how this part of the world has become so self-centric and materialistic that people there don’t even value their relationships. They don’t care for their loved ones. They have become so liberal and open-minded that they have started behaving like animals because only animals leave their parents when they become adults. This is the section of society that has renounced God completely. In the Western world, belief in God is going down day by day, and so is their society!
But again, they do have a valid reason not to believe in God!
There are numerous instances throughout human history where extreme belief in God has caused more harm than good. Religion has been the biggest cause of conflicts and the deaths of millions of people in history. We have seen many instances of the church enslaving and killing people in the name of God in history. Religious fanatics have caused destruction and oppression throughout history. And this holds true even today. Terrorism is the biggest example of how misinterpreted and extreme beliefs in God can be dangerous to society.
So now that we’ve analysed both scenarios, it’s important to ask whether we should believe in God or not.
The answer is not as simple as “yes” or “no”. According to me, both extreme belief and no belief at all in God cause us to lose our morality and conscience.
There should be a little bit of fear of God in everyone. This fear helps us retain our moral and family values. It helps us reflect on our karma that our parents raised us when we were helpless children, and now it’s our moral duty to take care of them when they are as helpless as the elderly. This is just one reason out of many, but my point is that a little faith in God helps us stick to our roots and connects us to our society.
However, we shouldn’t be so terrified of God that we start acting irrationally and committing atrocities. We shouldn’t be so immersed in our faith that we start forcing it on others. We must not forget that we are not slaves of God. Religion is for us; we are not for religion.
In the end, I will say………..
To much belief in God makes you a devil, and too little of it makes you an animal. You must believe in God as much as is necessary to make yourself human.
