The more you try to do, the less you’ll achieve.

How many times have you started a to-do list only to not accomplish anything on it?

As humans, we are limited in time, energy, and focus.

Assuming you have obligations like school, work, or simply hanging out with friends, this naturally decreases the amount of things you can get done in a day.

Especially with school and work, these obligations are often draining and can take away from your energy and focus.

Energy

The easiest part of this equation to fix is energy.

Ensure that you have a proper sleep schedule, with you waking up at a proper time, usually between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m.

You’ll also want to ensure you’re going to bed at a proper time, which is usually between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m.

If possible, make sure you’re waking up and sleeping at the same time each day, including weekends, to allow your body to better adjust to your sleep schedule and leave you feeling refreshed.

Aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, so you want to account for that when deciding when to wake up and go to bed.

Along with sleep, it is also crucial that you’re drinking plenty of water each day and mostly consuming healthy meals.

Taking care of your health will ensure that you don’t feel lethargic when doing your work, which directly affects your focus.

Focus

The reality is that for most of us, it isn’t realistic to expect to work for 10 hours straight.

Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which typically involves a 25-minute work session along with a 5-minute break.

Personally, I like to work for 45 to 60 minutes and give myself a 20-minute break in between.

Experiment to find the right work-break ratio that suits your needs.

However, on your breaks, I would caution against going on your phone and scrolling.

With how addicting social media(not Medium) is today, it is extremely easy to get distracted, and you’ll end up taking a much longer break than intended.

A small distraction can have huge consequences, affecting both your time and your concentration.

When working on your tasks, you want to utilize your limited time by working with intense focus.

You’ll get a lot more done in less time by directly focusing your attention on each task, rather than multitasking by watching a video in the background while trying to work.

Now, even with increased focus and energy, there’s still a time limit on how much you can achieve in a day.

You should assume that you can only get three things done today, so choose the three most important things to do that will bring you the most fulfillment.

Simplifying your day down to three things forces you to prioritize what is important enough to do.

You can work harder from this by deciding what you intend to do and what you don’t intend to accomplish, so you can plan your week better by knowing what you’re going to focus on.

You will gain more control over your week, and if you find yourself finishing your three most important tasks early, you can do more if you wish, with satisfaction.

Now, try this out for yourself.

Make a list of the three most important things you can do today and see if you can get more done by doing less.
