My Rugby team had a tournament in Calgary this weekend.

And it was an enjoyable experience.

We won some games and lost some.

But the best part was we had amazing captains and coaches.

They made the whole experience a blast.

I’ve learned much about how to be a perfect leader that your team loves from them and I want to share them with you.

So, if you’re ready, let’s dive in.

Step #1: Be relatable

The first step to being a perfect leader your team loves is to be relatable.

You must get to know them better on a deeper level.

Laugh with them, find out what makes them tick. Find out their worries and what keeps them up at night, and help them in the best way.

“When you become a leader success is all about growing others.”— Jack Welch

A big reason why our coaches and captains are the perfect leaders our team loves is because they are relatable.

How they do it:

  • They laugh all the time with us.
  • They spend lots of time getting to know us better.
  • They make sure we feel comfortable and accepted.

Step #2: Have a direction

You must have a direction to be the best leader your team loves.

You must inspire your team and be motivational.

And have your team work toward a common goal.

“A leader’s job is to provide clear direction.” — Paul Jarvis

My coaches and captains have a clear direction.

And their clear direction is why my team loves them.

How they do it:

  • They always give us motivational speeches and inspire us through their lives.
  • They have us work toward a common goal: winning a game or tournament.
  • They bring motivational speakers to talk to and show us ways to work better as a team. And we ask the speakers questions.

Step #3: Set boundaries

As a leader, you must set boundaries for your team.

Tell them what’s allowed and not allowed on your team and what they can expect from you as their leader.

That’s how you become the perfect leader your team loves.

“Effective leaders know when to say no and set boundaries around their time and energy.” — Henry Cloud

A fight broke out between one of our teammates and an opposing team’s player when we played a game against them.

One of our captains and coaches had to stop our teammate.

Our coaches and captains are perfect leaders our teams love because they know how to set boundaries like that example.

How they do it:

  • They tell each of us our strengths and our weaknesses.
  • They tell us how we can improve.
  • And they set boundaries for us that we must follow for our good.

Three simple steps to become the perfect leader your team loves:

  • Get to know your team on a deeper level. Spend time with them. Find out what makes them tick and laugh with them.
  • Inspire your team. Always talk to them motivationally. And have a common goal for your team to work towards.
  • Set boundaries your team shouldn’t cross.

The perfect leader is in you, whether you’re a coach or a boss.

And the key to unlocking that perfect leader in you is to become a leader your team loves.

These steps are the keys, so use them to become the perfect leader your team loves.
