Social media has become ingrained in our lives. We know excessive consumption of social media is harmful to us yet we cannot stop scrolling. So why not use them for our own growth?

Here’s how I’m transforming my Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube feeds into spaces of inspiration and self-improvement.

The Power of Social Media Algorithms:

Social media platforms employ sophisticated algorithms to sort content to users. It tracks each and every single interaction you do on the platform. The kind of posts you like, save, share etc. It then curates your feed based on the metrics it collects. It keeps suggesting you similar content on your feed, keeping you hooked to the platform.

Excessive consumption of such content will waste our precious time and leaves us no time for focusing on our goals.

Using social media for self-growth:

Unfollowing: The First Step Toward Growth:

If you’re constantly bombarded with content that doesn’t bring any real value ( content like gossip, self-deprecating jokes etc), then you’ll not cultivate growth mindset. Just as we learn from people around us in real lives, the same applies with virtual world. Only when you follow content that aligns with your goals, will you strive to do better.

The first and the foremost thing to do is to unfollow people or pages that don’t make you feel good or inspire you to do better.

Curating feed intentionally :

The second thing to do is to reflect to understand what kind of content you want to consume. It can be anything like books, music, art, finance, coding, astronomy, fashion etc.

Once you figure out your interests, look for influencers or pages that produce quality content in those spaces and follow them.

For example, I’m trying to develop a reading habit. I’ve started following influencers who discuss books, give recommendations and share reading experiences. Now, every time I open instagram, my feed is filled with books related content. This way, I’ve started discovering popular books and authors. It is inspiring me to read more. I’ve already finished 5 books so far this year and I’m onto my 6th one already!

If you’re looking to learn more about personal finance, start following people or pages that produce quality content on personal finance.

Whatever your goal is, try intentionally curating feed that aligns with your goal.

Be intentional of what you consume and don’t let the algorithm dictate it.

Pinterest for Personal Growth: Building a Vision Board

In my opinion, pinterest is the best of all social media platforms. It doesn’t have any nonsense as other platforms.

On pinterest, you can create boards for different things like fashion, books, music, movies etc. It will curate feed based on the the boards you’ve created.

Pinterest is also great for manifestation and visualization. Create a vision board and save pins related to that. Every time you open it, it suggests pins that align with your vision and you’ll feel motivated to do better, to achieve better.

This is how my pinterest board looks like :

Final Thoughts:

Ensure your social media reflects your goals and interests. Curating your feed intentionally can transform your scrolling experience from a time-waster into a tool for self-growth.
