How to Deal With Difficult People
Five tactical tips on what to do and say when things get weird
Dealing with difficult people is an inevitable part of life, but sometimes, it can feel like navigating a maze without a map.
Whether it’s a negative coworker, a demanding boss, or a confrontational neighbor, encounters with challenging personalities can leave us feeling stressed, drained, and confused.
Here are four effective strategies for what to do and what to say when things get uncomfortable so you can navigate these tricky situations gracefully and confidently.
1. Clarify, don’t justify
Difficult people will make you feel like you have to provide a reason for your choices that they approve of.
If someone is trying to impose their beliefs or opinions on you, remember that they are not entitled to an explanation for your own.
You can say this instead:
“I know this is the best choice for me right now.”
2. Acknowledge, don’t argue
Difficult people will try to provoke or argue with you and can use that as an opportunity to put you down, gaslight, or manipulate you.
