How to Discipline Your Thoughts

Our brain processes millions of information every minute. Different thoughts can just come into your mind like a computer that is loaded with both good and corrupt files.

Having control over our minds helps us achieve our short-term and long-term goals. It helps us get through our days professionally with a clear, confident, growth mindset. It's hard to achieve our goals when our minds are under attack — but taking control over our thoughts can make us happier, less stressed, and better equipped to solve problems or attain goals.

Here are some methods that we can use to control our thoughts:-

You have to try to do something, but you try looking for excuses and you end up discouraging yourself in the long run. If so:

1) Do not try to choose your thoughts but control them as they come. Whenever your mind tries to bring out possible things that will discourage you from a particular speech, instead of trying to convince yourself not to do so— try to watch your thoughts come and go without really repressing them.

2) Remain in the moment:

instead of thinking about what has happened and what will happen, you can just focus on the present and consider what you have now that can make you achieve what you want. That way you can have your mind in the present.

3) Observe your thoughts without judgement: return to your thoughts without really critiquing yourself, instead of thinking about what makes you make the wrong decision. Look at the possibility of you accomplishing a particular task instead of complaining. For instance, instead of saying I am bad at writing and saying I haven't figured out how to sew properly, maybe I should try harder.

4) Take action to address your thoughts: Thoughts without action are useless. If you want to, you need to put action into your thoughts.

Often we cannot control our thoughts because we are scared to act on them, hence we need to make active plans and do what is right. If your thoughts seem to persist and uncontrollable, you can decide to see a therapist at this point.

5) Temporarily divert your thoughts to other activities: Jogging, walking, and running are examples of exercises that you can do to get your mind off your rogue thoughts. If you aren't good at doing rigorous activities, you can simply turn on the TV or radio, you can just decide to discuss with your friends and family things outside of what you don't want to do.

For example, if you’re siting at the bank to rectify some issue with your account, instead of being anxious to ask the accountant about your account, you can just take out your phone and start going through emails.

Remember, this is a short way of getting your thoughts out. You can prepare for getting your thoughts distracted each time you come through issues.

6) Talk to someone to get your thoughts open out: sometimes we might not know the worth of something unless someone showed us. When we talk to people, we open our minds to different perspectives and views that we may not know can help us accomplish something. Talking to a therapist is often the best method, but you can talk to your friends if you can’t afford a therapist.
