For years, I thought my knees were just broken. Bad genetics, bad luck — whatever.

Every time I climbed the stairs, bent down, or even stood up too quickly, that familiar sharp pain would hit. It wasn’t just discomfort — it was a wake-up call. A reminder that my body, once so reliable, was starting to show signs of wear. And every time it happened, I couldn’t help but feel like my body was betraying me.

So, I started avoiding movement. Taking the elevator instead of the stairs. Sitting down more often. Convincing myself that “rest” was the solution.

And the worst part? I stopped trying.

I’d be out with friends, and every time we had to walk too far or take the stairs, I’d say, “Go ahead, I’ll catch up.”

Pretending I was just taking it easy, when really? I was avoiding the pain. Avoiding movement. Avoiding reality.
