No matter who you are, the first thing you judge when you enter someone’s room is its tidiness.

You could have the messiest room in the world, yet you would still say to yourself, “Damn, this room is messy af.”

Don’t worry, that’s how we are hardwired to think.

But it’s so hard to keep a room clean. Trust me, I know. I’ve been in a dorm, and I never find what I’m looking for because a protective layer of clothing covers everything in there.

It doesn’t matter if it’s the bed or the study or even in some rare cases the kitchen table — if I didn’t find space anywhere else. But it’s not always messy.

Sometimes I go into a trance state of mind where I clean up my room like I’ve got OCD. After I’m done, the place looks like it’s ready to go down in history as the neatest room ever.

In reality, it only stays like that for a few days. I have found that it’s easier to spend 10 minutes each day tidying up small portions than a few hours or more every time a mountain of clothes decides to alter my room’s terrain.

As promised here are a few tips if you’re struggling with the same landscaping problem as I.

1. Set a timer for 10 minutes

When there’s a ticking clock, it usually seems easier to clean the room. The rush from trying to finish something quickly will keep you on your feet and help you actively clean up your room.

If the clock runs out, it’s no big deal. Set up another timer and continue.

However, a word of caution — I have to admit that more than two timers usually kills motivation.

2. Watch a video of someone cleaning up their room.

Speaking of motivation, we live in a world where most of us are attracted to shiny things, which makes it hard to focus on one task.

I don’t just mean it literally. When we come across something that pops and seems like a cool thing to do, we instantly get on board.

A large portion of that burst of motivation comes from watching videos of people doing a particular activity. Watch a video, and you might just be motivated enough to clean your room.

3. Music really helps

Notably, the Trance and House genres are the most effective. There is something so soothing and hypnotizing about these two genres.

It brings a sort of calmness and tranquility. In that state, it’s easier to see the mountain of clothes as a simple task making it more comfortable to start.

If you’re not into these two genres, don’t be afraid to give it a try. If you find these two genres disgusting — I know someone who does — it’s alright, you can listen to your favorite songs on at least 75% volume and still get the work done.

4. Challenge a friend or partner

Who doesn’t love winning? Especially when all you have to do is put things back where they belong and do it first.

This method is one of my favorite ways to get motivated. Healthy competition. It gives you a dopamine boost and gets the job done. Perfect!

Takeaway

There are many reasons not to tidy up your room. But an orderly room makes it easier for the mind to concentrate on the task at hand and yields better results. At least, that’s what I’ve observed.

A few minutes spent moving stuff around each day is worth the payoff in the long run for both productivity and peace of mind. Give it a try sometime and see for yourself!
