I have attended seven Model United Nations Conferences in the span of three years. I didn’t speak a word in council except for when I had to deliver my opening speech during my first conference, and I ended up winning Best Delegate in my council during my seventh conference.

I think it is safe to say that I started at the bottom and eventually worked my way to the top. It wasn’t easy but I managed to do it by making mistakes and learning from them each time.

So here are the main aspects of what you’d be dealing with before, during and after the conference and some tips on how to do it:

1. Choose a council you are genuinely interested in

The first thing you need to do once you have decided to attend a specific MUN is to look at the list of councils available and read through the topics of debate. It is best for you to choose a council that has both topics you are interested in because you will spend an equal amount of time discussing both of them.

Just to be safe, make sure you google the topics to ensure it is something you would want to spend hours debating about.
