From this perspective, humans are seen as separate from and superior to nature, and other entities like animals, plants, and nature are primarily considered resources for human use.
“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Genesis 1:26.
This verse is a foundational passage in the creation story, emphasizing that humans are created in the image and likeness of God, giving them a special role in stewardship over the Earth and its creatures. It has been a significant focus of theological discussion and interpretation throughout history.
Human possesses a unique characteristic — the ability to envision (and appreciate) its own existence, which makes us fairly self-interpreting creatures. Throughout our history, we have persistently sought to understand our own purpose, and determine whether our ability to reason makes us apart from all other living beings.
