Humility is a Lie
All my life, people have told me to be humble.
“Bow down to older people, they know better”.
Well, I don’t think they do.
In Portugal, we have a saying:
“Idade é um posto”
It means: “Age is a rank”.
Kinda like the ranks in the military. That’s the point.
You rise up the ranks by staying there longer, not necessarily because you’re the best.
Sure, you’ll rise faster if you’re the best, but you won’t rise before you’ve spent a specific amount of time there.
When I was working for my mom, my uncle was there with me. Just like me, an employee.
He had been there for almost 3 years when I arrived.
After 1 year of me being there, I was given the task of going to clients’ offices (or wherever they were at the time) to collect the documents we needed to process. I had to do this every single month.
After 4 months of doing it, my mom needed me in the office. I’ve always been a fast learner. My uncle wasn’t. He was 54 at the time.
So she told me to train my uncle on how to do the collecting thing.
Also, before he was employed by my mom, he was a truck driver. It made sense.
