Hush, Hush, Sweet Stormy
Thanks to Moby Grape, I’m creating a musical about Donald Trump’s campaign-finance fraud trial
The morning after the second day of former President Donald Trump’s trial in New York for fraud — paying hush money while running for President to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress with who he allegedly boinked while his wife, Melania, was pregnant, and passing it off as a campaign expense — I woke up with a Moby Grape song in my head.
It was “Murder in My Heart for the Judge,” a bluesy tune by Grape member Don Stevenson from the band’s 1968 album Wow.
The lyrics, quoted here in part, make it obvious why it could be sung by the singer/actor who portrays Trump in my proposed musical.
Walked into the courtroom/Knowing it was gonna bring me down
And that big fat bald representative of justice/And the prosecutor began to frown
I said I’m sorry, sorry, for the things I’ve done/I sure want to change my evil ways
And the judge looked down at me and said/Just for getting smart, boy/I’m a gonna give you more than a lifetime
Murder in my heart for the judge/I’ve got murder in my heart for the judge
