I Admired Whiteness as a Child

But it didn’t make me love myself any less

Between the ages of 9–12, I was part of a choir that sang African American spirituals from the slave days that were passed on through the choir director’s family. The double meanings, the harmony, the syntony, the rhythm. I loved it. It took me a while to love it, though.
