I Cried at the News Today — Roberta Flack Has Died — Another Icon of My Youth Gone
The R&B singer/songstress reached 88 — what a legacy she leaves behind
Two songs flashed through my mind as tears trickled down my wrinkled cheeks. Her first hit from 1972, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and her second hit from 1973, Killing me Softly.
She departed on the morning of Monday, 24 February, 2025 — exactly thirteen months after my soulmate’s continuance.
As those songs reverberate in my heart, I pray she is now at peace, but also hope my beloved will bump into her on the other side, though I’m unsure if souls bump or just drift around in ethereal ripples of love.
We both loved those two hit songs, although we only met each other and fell in love a decade or so later.
I’m not here to share her life story, but to honour her memory for the joy she brought into many people’s lives.
(If you want to know more about her, you can read this tribute from The Guardian.)
I fell in love with blues, soul and R&B in my teens in the sixties — genres that resonate with me and lift me when I’m down. Like I’ve been the past week or two.
