I got my first 100 followers on Medium within 3 days, here’s how!
Bonus: The 11 best publications for new writers!
Since 2019, I have been writing on Medium.
However, I had less than 43 followers before September 2022.
My followers have increased to over 100 within 3 days, but how did I achieve this?
Recently I published an article about AI and it went viral.
This article got me 5.2k+ views, 1.8k+ claps, and 40+ comments, and I got 100+ followers within three days after I published it, and now I have 229+ followers on Medium.
Here’s how you can go viral on Medium and how you can get your first 100 followers on Medium.
1. Contribute to Medium publications
To join a publication, you simply have to read its guidelines and instructions and follow them. You can get instructions from the publications “About us” page or the “Write for us” or “Contribute” page.
You usually have to send an e-mail or fill out an online form to reach the editor. Sometimes you need to include a Medium draft as well.
Illumination is an excellent publication for beginner writers, it’s easy to join too. Just visit this page and fill out the form if you wanna join Illumination — https://digitalmehmet.com/contact/
I found the above link from the SYNERGY (Illumination’s sister publication) publication home page.
Listed below are the 11 best Medium publications you must join as a new writer if you want to grow and improve your writing skills. With the help of these publications, your posts will reach more readers on Medium and you’ll also receive feedback from the editors.
Links within the publication’s name go to the publication’s submission rules and guidelines or the publication’s home page.

2. Make your article easy to read, add value, and keep it straightforward
To make your writing engaging, add a personal touch, use images, use bucket brigades, and keep it simple.
Ensure that your article is well organized with headings and subheadings, as well as short paragraphs.
Don’t forget to check your article for spelling and grammatical errors. You can use Grammarly to make sure that your article is free of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
Keep your content original.
You should also avoid publishing plagiarized content because Google hates plagiarism so it’s harmful to SEO and Medium as well also hates copy-paste content.
If you already have a blog, you can republish your content on Medium as well. All you need to do is add a link to your original article in Medium’s article settings.
The method is known as Canonical Linking. This way google also understands what’s the original content and won’t penalize you for copying content.
You can easily add the URL of your original article to your Medium article. Medium will automatically add the Canonical Link to your article if you import it using its import feature.
If you wanna add it manually when you’re editing the article on Medium, just click the three-dot icon and go to More Settings, then go to Advanced Settings and then you’ll see the option to add Canonical Link there.

3. Engage with the content you read on Medium
By now, I’m assuming that you read a lot. I read a lot too, and I believe writers should read articles to gain knowledge and get new ideas.
Medium is filled with masterpiece articles. I suggest you follow the topics you’re interested in, as well as some great authors, and start reading now.
When you read something on Medium, engage with it (Clap and comment).
Make sure you’re not just clapping and commenting like robots. Take the time to read the article and then write a good comment.
Final thoughts!
It’s not a good idea to follow thousands of people and expect them to follow you back.
It’s not the right way to grow on Medium!
You should instead focus on writing quality content.
Medium will reward you.
One day you’ll go viral. 💚
