Never in a million years did I think I would start a newsletter.

Context

Let’s back things up a bit. As in the title, I started a Substack newsletter 2 weeks ago. Why? Well, I thought a newsletter would be a better way for me to connect with my audience plus I wanted to try something new. I’ve read stories here on Medium of writers who have started newsletters and have seen success. In a way, it motivated me to start one as well.

Why Substack?

At first I wasn’t too picky on which website I would use to host my newsletter. The first articles I read about starting a newsletter were talking about Substack, so I guess the real reason would be my own bias. However, Substack has proved to be quite useful so far. The user interface is well designed which I love. I don’t know if it’s talked enough about, but their YouTube videos and blog posts are really helpful especially for beginners.

Results!

With that out of the way, time to reveal my results. Starting out, I had no expectation of success and I didn’t know if my readers would sign up or if they found my writing interesting enough to sign up. Despite my own insecurities, I’d say I’ve done fairly well in my opinion.

For the first few days, not much was going on. However, things starting gaining traction around Nov 25. Today, I average around 7 new subscriptions per day. Currently, I have 98 free subscribers and 0 paid. I plan on keeping all my content free for now.

TL;DR

Most of my traffic comes from NewsBreak, where I write articles on a variety of topics. Starting a newsletter may seem daunting at first. Where do I promote my newsletter? How do I drive traffic?

If you’re reading this, than starting right here on Medium is a start. Explore other places like NewsBreak and even Quora. Write about content that you like because don’t forget a newsletter is yours and yours alone. You can write about almost anything. Good luck beautiful people.
