Being blunt as a brick: I’m talking about work. So, no, binge-watching Netflix doesn’t qualify as a proper “X”.

And I know you know what work means, so let’s skip that part.

Rough introduction done, let’s get back to, um, work?

Solve the equation. Find your “X”.

“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” ― Charles Kingsley

Man, I love that quote.

Are you enthusiastic about carpentry? Would you do it for life, unpaid?

If you said “yes” twice, you’re golden. You have your “X”. You’ve just solved the most important equation in your life. Celebrate!

If you can get paid to do “X”, so much the better

But I see this as a bonus.

Are your friends asking you to make “signature” chairs for them? That’s great.

Could you quit your day job and make carpentry your sole income source? Also great.

Oh, you’re just enjoying the process and making wood sculptures for yourself simply because you can’t not do it? Man, that’s awesome. Being drawn to an activity like that is a blessing. It is your “X”, which you would happily do forever without getting a dime for it. Again, celebrate.

A workless life will kill you

As it is killing thousands around the world, every day.

Thousands of retired people who deteriorate physically and mentally in their comfortable chairs while watching TV or staring at their phones.

Poor people. They did not solve the equation. They don’t know their “X”.

You don’t want that fate, right? So, solve the equation. Find your “X”.
