Founded in 2011, the language app Duolingo continues to be a popular learning platform for people looking to learn a new language. But is it the end all, be all of aspiring linguists?

I started studying German on the app over four months ago, and while there’s a lot I like about it, there are also things that could be better, so let’s get into it.

Duolingo works on the freemium model, meaning you technically don’t have to pay any money to use it. However, if you go with the free version, there are significant limitations in place to entice you to go with the paid version. For instance, while doing the lessons, you can only make a handful of mistakes before it boots you out. With the paid version, you can make all the mistakes you want. And like any good app these days, you can bypass ads with the paid version.

As for the exercises themselves, they come in a variety of types. There are exercises that task you with translating sentences from the language you’re trying to learn into your native tongue, and vice-versa. Some of these give you a bunch of words and you have to make a sentence with them.
