It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

What happened?

As the writing on the wall turned red instead of blue, Twitter (X) was full of posts asking those questions. Surely, the American people weren’t going to fall for it again. Surely, they weren’t going back to repeat 2016.

Well, yeah, they were and they did.

And they did so convincingly. At last count, according to the Associated Press this morning, Donald Trump has 277 electoral college votes and Kamala Harris has 224, with a handful of states still to be decided.

The Republicans have taken the Senate and look like they might take the House of Representatives too.

It sure wasn’t a red wave, but it was a pretty convincing red ripple.

What happened to the super-tight race?

What happened to turning the page?

The US was on the verge of making history by electing its first woman of colour as president.

Instead, they made history in another way, by handing Donald Trump the biggest comeback story imaginable.
