A 1,000 word story

After they’d chatted on the phone for a while, reporting amusing details about their lives, Kayla’s oldest friend said, “Come down here for a visit.” It was something Jasmine had often suggested, but this time she added, “You know you want to and I do need your help.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to. I’d love to see you and I could do with a break, but…”

Although often very tempted, Kayla had so far always refused such invitations, except of course for Kayla’s recent wedding. That’s because it wasn’t just her former schoolfriend who’d moved to Weston Super Mare four years ago — her whole family had gone, including her brother. If Kayla had spent a week or more with Jasmine, it would have been impossible to avoid meeting Brandon again. She wasn’t ready for that yet and wasn’t sure she ever would be.

This time it was different. Jasmine married a serviceman last year, so they have their own place now. Brandon had moved out of their parents home too, Jasmine had informed her as though Kayla might have some interest in the matter. Apparently Brandon lived near his sister, but it sounded as though his flat wasn’t so close that Kayla was bound to bump into him if she took avoiding action. Which she would. She’d managed OK at the wedding, hadn’t she?
