Asia is definitely less progressive as far as social issues are concerned. Technology? They’re the best at it. Engineering? Toyota Prius is the most reliable car 5 years in a row. Social issues? Not so much. It’s slow-moving and that includes beauty standards. Thin is still very much in.

Here in the West, we’re riding the wave of the “body positivity” movement, pushing acceptance of all shapes and sizes, and while thin is still in here too, it’s not quite the same intensity as it is in Asia. When it comes to beauty, Asia can be very, very shallow and extremely toxic.

Recently, Jennie from the #1 most popular girl group in the entire world, BlackPink, lost a lot of weight very quickly through diet and rigorous exercise. Mind you, she was already tiny to start with and not the least bit fat. Here in America, we’d be concerned and calling out about fears of anorexia and other eating disorders. Her waist, even for her tiny size, is waifishly thin (maybe even surgically thin).
