My last dental cleaning was a horrible experience. I was jabbed in the tongue multiple times with a pick, and the water machine wasn’t angled correctly, causing water to run down my neck and soak my shirt. Sometimes, the tech needed leverage and used my face to brace herself. She also kept putting her foul-tasting gloved fingers on my tongue.
I had been going to this dentist for three years without a problem, but this time, it was everything I dreaded about going to the dentist. I didn’t want to go in the first place, but it’s a necessary evil.
I’m not the only one who hates and fears the dentist. There’s a website devoted to it called Dental Fear Central. They claim that in addition to the pain, people are embarrassed to go, especially if it’s been a while. People worry about the state of their teeth if they haven’t been practicing good oral hygiene. They fear they will be judged and lectured to. They may even worry about being ripped off by a dentist recommending procedures they don’t need. If you want to strike fear in people, say these two words: root canal.
