Here are some key sentences from The Daily Star about Jute Mills coming to an end:

Three years after the closure of state-run jute mills, Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) is still failing to attract investors to re-open its jute mills.

Now, BJMC is leasing out the mills to textile mills and RMG factories.

Worker leaders and industry experts are seeing this move as the dead end of state-run jute industries from which reopening of the jute mills may never be possible.

BJMC has devised such a plan that would leave hundreds of thousands of jute mill workers permanently unemployed as there is no doubt that these mills will ultimately be taken over by the non-jute industries. — Ruhul Amin Coordinator of Sramik-Krishak Oikya Parishad

So far, only five jute mills went into production under private management.

The thing is, Bangladesh is extremely rich in Jute. It is one of the primary producers for the vast majority of the jute trade.

If Jute Mills are closed down in Bangladesh, we risk losing one of the most reasonably priced natural fibres, which is second only to cotton in terms of production and potential use range.

Not only are we losing people to climate change, but also the things that would help us solve it.

A hectare of jute plants consumes about 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide and releases 11 tonnes of oxygen during the Jute Growing Season.

If we let those Jute factories to shut down, we will face a catastrophic change in our climate. The production of jute is getting lower each day.

Jute can make a difference in the world and contribute to the effort to keep our environment safe, clean, and fresh; as it is affordable, long-lasting, and eco-friendly.

It is a natural, sturdy alternative to synthetic fibres, and is often preferred for its biodegradable nature.

It can be used for so many things…

Such as:

  • Horticulture
  • Construction and Civil works
  • Home Décor
  • Fashion and Lifestyle
  • Food Packaging
  • Sports

See? Why are we not using this fibre? Not only can we make businesses out of it, but also we can save the planet.

I believe that jute can save us from climate change and that we should keep jute industries from dying or else we and our economy will suffer in various ways from climate change. Animals are suffering from it too, and jute seems extremely beneficial to me.
