The High Cost of Being Late

Why are some people always late? Are you okay with it, or does it drive you up the wall? Whether you’re punctually challenged or find it irritating, let’s discuss each side.

The punctually challenged

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “They’d be late to their own funeral.” While it’s an exaggeration, I’ve known more than a few people who fit the bill, and yes, they frustrate me to no end.

Lateness has been a pet peeve of mine for as long as I can remember. I suspect it started when I joined the military as a teenager. Maybe things are different today, but back then, lateness was not an option. No excuses. Ever.

That mindset followed me into the business world. While the consequences weren’t quite as severe, punctuality still mattered. It often depended less on the organization and more on who you worked for. In the companies I led, being on time wasn’t just a preference; it was a matter of principle. Time is money, and I wasn’t in business to waste either. I left little room for tardiness.

That said, not everyone shares my perspective. In retirement, I’ve relaxed somewhat, but not entirely. I still view chronic lateness, especially when it’s avoidable, as a sign of disrespect.
