On May 6th, 1964, Roger Bannister shocked the world when he became the first person to run a sub-4 minute mile.

Runners had been chasing this goal since at least 1886, a challenge involving the most brilliant coaches and gifted athletes worldwide. But despite numerous attempts, until Bannister, no one had been able to achieve this feat.

The idea of a 4-minute mile remained elusive.

Bannister’s run challenged other’s limiting beliefs

Despite decades of failed attempts once Bannister proved it was possible a funny thing happened. 46 days later, an Australian runner, John Landy achieved an even faster time — running a mile in 3 minutes 58 seconds. Then a year later, three runners broke the four-minute-mile barrier in a single race.

Today approximately 1,500 people have run a mile in 4 minutes or less, with the current record being held by Hicham El Guerrouj, a retired Moroccan runner who ran the mile in a breathtaking 3 minutes 43 seconds.
