It was one of those perfect early Fall days in New York City. The summer’s humid grip on the city had finally loosened, allowing the crisp breezes of autumn to work their invigorating magic. I was meeting up with a new friend we’ll call Jake, a recent transplant to the city, at a cozy coffee shop near Columbus Circle. We had struck up a friendship through a mutual interest in knitting and fiber arts, along with an appreciation for classic cinema, bonding over our shared love of musicals from a bygone era and old Hollywood films with glamorous stars and witty dialogue.

As I walked into the shop, I spotted Jake already waiting, two steaming cups perched on his table. He suggested we take our coffees to go and enjoy the beautiful day outside in Central Park. Clutching our drinks, we struck up conversation and stepped out onto the bustling Manhattan sidewalks and began our walk to the nearby oasis of green space.

It didn’t take long, however, for my impatience to rear its ugly head. Jake was moving at a slow pace, and to my New York-tuned stride, his ambling gait felt torturously slow. I tried to mask my growing irritation, but my patience was wearing thin and my annoyance…
