As the plane took flight

I craned my neck to see the city zoom out behind me

Until it reached the horizon behind,

Eyes brimming like a tearful mother seeing her child off

— — — -

It hadn’t struck me until very recently

That I’d have to learn to let go-

Leaving behind this city that

Introduced me to growing up

— — — —

A city that blossomed with pink flowers as I fell in love

Winced as I took first sip of whiskey,

Happily danced with me on my first time at a nightclub!

— — — — —

She shed rainy tears the day my heart broke

Gave me new friends when the old ones left

Cooked me a new cuisine that I’ve grown to love;

Taught me that I could still love her despite bumpy roads, potholes and other flaws

And that it works the same way when loving people!

— — — — -

On that note I turn and look forward again

Straight at where the aisle ends and the cabin crew member stands smiling-

As if to welcome me into an unknown new life

— — — — —

One day, may be one year later — or three

I’ll return to visit and ask her how she’s doing,

But that will be after both she and I will have changed- with different lives and priorities

I’ll watch with a smile as she helps another 17 year old

grow up into a beautiful human being!
