As I reflect on the concept of happiness and our constant efforts to achieve it, I find myself lost and bewildered in this pursuit of happiness.

What’s real happiness? Why is it so hard to feel happy and fulfilled with my life? Is happiness a mere illusion, like the mirage of a harbor amid the burning desert? I ask myself often.

Sound familiar?

During my high school years, getting good enough grades and securing a seat in my desired college was the big challenge in front of me, so I told myself, “You have to work really hard, Rimi, and with the results, you will pave a path to your happiness.”

I managed to get a good college — not the one I wanted, but it was decent too. I was proud of my small triumph, but I was not happy. It wasn’t time I became happy, or so I thought.

Because my focus was on the next big thing. To study even harder and earn a suitable job by the time I graduate. To have a degree, a well-paying job, and enjoy my life basking in the sunshine on a beach somewhere on the other side of the globe. A perfect combo of ingredients for the recipe of happiness, you know?

I was always busy chasing the next milestone. The next big achievement. I was desperate to prove to myself and others what I was capable of.

I had been a fool.

Months turned into years, but I could never be happy. With time, I forgot what it looked like to be truly happy. To feel happy.

Urgh, is this how we get stuck in this rabbit hole of “the next big thing in life” and miss on the happiness we so desperately seek?

In the relentless pursuit of happiness, we often find ourselves chasing elusive milestones, believing that they hold the key to our contentment.

But today, as I share these thoughts, I’ve come to a realization. I’ve learned that happiness is not a destination at the end of a long journey; it’s a choice we make in each passing moment.

It’s about finding contentment in who we are, right here, right now, with all our imperfections and aspirations. So, let’s not postpone our happiness any longer.

Let’s make a promise to ourselves: to embrace this very moment, to savor it, and to infuse it with joy. Life’s beauty lies in the tapestry of these fleeting seconds, and by choosing happiness today, we ensure that our journey is as beautiful as the destinations we seek.

Let me rewrite it: I am happy. Today. Now. Right at this moment. With whatever I have and wherever I am in life at this point, I am happy. I am happy with myself. My struggles and triumphs. My highs and lows. I need nothing else to add to this moment. It’s whole in itself. I am whole, with all my virtues and shortcomings. And I am happy for who I am.

It’s a kind of promise that I want to make to myself right now that:

I will no longer postpone my happiness while waiting to accomplish the next big thing in life. I will move ahead in life, set goals, and try to aim for them, not in rigor or desperation but with love, hope, and happiness.

I hope I will be able to keep this promise on my last day.

Final words

Whenever you catch your mind giving excuses to postpone your happiness for the next time, silence it there and then and remind yourself: “Haven’t you already made your happiness wait too long? It would be unfair to not catch it right now and embrace this time you have — second by second — before it flies in front of your eyes.”

Remember, time is fleeting, and you don’t get another shot at life. So stop for a while on your journey and grab this moment when you still have it.

Thank you for stopping by! I know I’m not the best, but if you want to support me, you can buy me a coffee👇
