Life Lessons From The New ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Movie
Reflections, Lessons and Review on the New “Bob Marley: One Love” Movie
I watched the new Bob Marley Movie over the weekend in an Ecuadorian Cinema that displayed Spanish subtitles. Thankfully, the movie was broadcasted in English/Jamaican Patois, and not tainted by Spanish voiceovers.
It would have been painful to sit through, because my Spanish — No Bueno!
I hadn’t planned on watching the movie, but somehow, the opportunity had landed in my lap and I wasn’t going to turn it down, and I’m glad I didn’t!
It was worth going to the Cinema at 10:30am, on a Saturday morning.
Now, there I sat in front of the huge cinema screen, eyes-wide, teary-eyed, sipping my Vanilla Cappuccino and beaming with joy and inspiration!
The movie provided me the perfect dose of inspiration I needed at this point in my life, especially as a writer!
I’ve been contemplating purpose and impact, a lot lately. I’ve been asking myself —
“What’s all of this for?”
I must use my gifts, talents and skills in service of something greater than Myself - something more meaningful. I suspect that it may be my only path to true fulfillment.
Watching the Bob Marley Movie, I recalled memories from one of my favorite professors from Seminary, Dr. James Cone.
He would always say in his classes —
You better find your voice in this world and use it! The world needs you.
Sitting in the cinema seats, I was transported back in time to my Seminary days. It dawned on me — This is exactly what Bob Marley did!
He found his voice in this world, and music was the avenue through which his message was shared across the globe!
Bob Marley found his voice, and he used it!
What does it Mean To Find Your Voice?
Contemplate these and I’m sure you’ll arrive at your answer….
What do I want to share with the world? What are my personal philosophies, my truths, my life experiences, and my lessons?
What is MY personal message to world?
What is MY personal truth?
Can I speak from MY heart, even when it’s difficult for others to hear?
Can I speak truth to Power?
Can I speak MY truth even if the world threatens to cancel ME?
Can I speak MY truth in this day and age, in the face of digital lynching?
Do I have the courage, boldness and bravery it takes to be able to speak MY truth to the world, in 2024?
Finding your voice, entails listening to your heart and speaking truth.
What is your heart telling you you need to share?
Your heart is connected to the Soul of the world. Whatever your heart is telling you to share, is what you’re supposed to share. It is what the world needs to hear!
Maybe your words/voice/message will meet another heart somewhere in the world, and your message could:
- Inspire
- Motivate
- Calm a troubled heart
- Bring relief to someone’s life
- Comfort a grieving heart
- Entertain
- Prophesy
- Educate
- Put a smile on someones face
- Heal
- Make someone feel like they’re not alone
Words have power! Use them with intentionality!
As writers, we have a personal responsibility to use our words with integrity.
We’re mandated by the self imposed titles as writers, to be mindful with how we use our words and voices in this world.
Once we understand how powerful our words/voices are, we will treat them as sacred; thinking carefully, before uttering any!
Lessons You Can Learn From Bob Marley
Be authentic: Be yourself, and bring all of yourself to all that you do.
The world needs your uniqueness. You’re one of a kind. Be that one of a kind, the creator has made you to be!
Follow Your Highest Passion or Highest excitement:
You might create unexpected abundance in the process, leave a legacy and make a difference in this world.
Overcome your fear of speaking truth to Power:
Your message can change the world for the better.
We will all die eventually, some sooner than others.
Act Now! Tomorrow is not promised.
My Final Review of the Movie
I thought the movie was excellent, brilliantly shot, highlighting aspects of the singers life that leaves the viewer energized, entertained, inspired and yearning for more.
The lead actor who plays Bob Marley, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Lashana Lynch, who plays Rita Markey, artistically embodied the characters and honored their legacies through stunning performances.
The movie has also garnered a lot of negative reviews online by disappointed fans who felt that it was lacking in depth, and breathe on Marley’s life, as the movie primarily revolved around three main chapters in the Jamaican legend’s life. Some viewers were left wanting to learn more about Marleys life, especially about his philandering ways.
For me, it was Genius!
I left the Movies, uttering…..
JAAAAH !!! Rasta-Far-I !!!
