What are you selling?
Do you realize the world is one big store and everyone is in sales? The question is: are people buying what you’re selling?
What are you selling?
Arthur Brisbane, one of the best-known American newspaper editors of the 20th century, made a bold claim:
“All the world is a store, and all the people in it are salespeople.”
“That is to say, every one of us human beings is trying to transfer an idea from his own head and to some other brain. And that is the essence of salesmanship.”
At its heart, selling isn’t only about money, products, or business. It’s about transferring ideas, beliefs, and emotions from one person to another. Do you think of yourself as a salesperson? Most people don’t. Yet when you realize that every conversation, interaction, and relationship involves a kind of exchange, the picture becomes clear: we are all selling, all the time.
We are always selling something
Think back to your earliest years. As a baby, you cried to get your parents’ attention. You didn’t call it “selling,” but it worked. You got fed, changed, or comforted. Those were the first pitches of your life.
