Do you ever wish to go back in time simply because you can look and feel younger? I know I do every time I look through my freshman photographs. Well, all you have to do to reverse aging is to eat right! A recent study by the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that omega-3 fatty acids are not only ideal when it comes to reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes but it also offers benefits of longevity to its consumers.

Although you can find this age-reversing nutrient in several fatty fish, sardines are your best bet. Just consuming one serving of sardines per day can help you meet your body’s requirements of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12 (which is also great for anti-aging)

Sardines belong to the same category as anchovies. These fishes are oily, salty, and pungent. Sardines are native to the Mediterranean and belong to the family of Herrings. Though mostly found in cans, you can also buy them fresh. These tiny fish come packed with essential nutrients.

Sardines are extremely high in:

Omega-3 fatty acids

This healthy fat is much needed where heart disease is concerned. Studies have also shown that the consumption of sardines helps with managing erectile dysfunction, an issue that affects men as they advance in age if they are not following an active lifestyle.

Calcium

Be it, men or women, we all require calcium to maintain healthy and strong bones. Though women have a higher chance of developing osteoporosis, men too require calcium, as with age, our bones are prone to losing calcium.

Vitamin D

Sardines are one of those few special foods that contain vitamin D. This magic vitamin is much needed for improving bone health, preventing cancer, and even giving the immune system a boost.

Vitamin B12

This critical vitamin to look and feel younger is present in sardines. Not only does vitamin b12 prevent anemia, but it also keeps your nerves and blood cells healthy. Eating sardines is a great way to fire up your metabolism.

How many sardines should you eat per day?

Consuming two to three sardines per day would give you all the benefits that this fish offers, says experts. However, since canned sardines are very high in salt, it would be a good idea to look for canned sardines that have a “no added salt” label. For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, don’t worry; you can get your omega-3, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 from fruits, seeds, nuts, legumes, and vegetables. You could also opt to consume fish/krill oil supplements.
