As someone who has been receiving almost daily emails from Gavin Newsom or his campaign and others supporting him, I can see that they are taking nothing for granted. Although the recent polls show Newsom as clearly ahead in the polls, they realize that anything can happen. They are still working hard to try and ensure that Newsom is not recalled.
The 2021 California gubernatorial recall election is a special election to recall Governor Gavin Newsom scheduled for sometime in 2021. It will be the second gubernatorial recall election in the state’s history. California is one of 19 states that allow recall elections. Under state law, any elected official may be subjected to a recall. To trigger a recall election of a statewide elected official, proponents must gather a certain amount of signatures from registered voters within a certain time period. The amount must equal 12 percent of the votes cast in the previous election for that office. Based on the previous gubernatorial election, the 2021 recall petition required 1,495,709 signatures.
