Charles lifted the needle on the gramophone and stepped out into the hall to answer the telephone.

“I’m sorry but we’ve lost Phyllis.” Those were the words used to tell him his bride to be was gone from his life. She wasn’t lost like a dropped bus ticket to be picked up again if he just turned around and retraced his steps. She was gone forever and nothing could bring her back…
