Ten-year-old Tommy Lynn was saving for a while to buy his first bike for Christmas. He had his paper route, but that alone wasn’t enough. He would hurry home after school every day, change quickly, do his homework, then go around his neighborhood to see if anyone needs help with anything. This continues for the next three and a half months until it was eight days before Christmas.

He had saved up enough money to get the bike he wanted. He knew his mother couldn’t afford it, and he wanted to prove to her that he was smart and responsible. He was waiting on her to take him to the store in the mall when she got her day off, which was in four days. On the final day of school, he noticed that Amanda Willis, his best friend was absent. As school dismissed he went to her house. She was sitting on her porch with a very sad look on her face.

“Hey,” Tommy said, walking faster towards her. She sat up as he approaches, tears escaping from her eyes.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

She let out, “My daddy is in jail, he lost his job two months ago. We have no money to pay his fine. So we will have Christmas without him.”

Without a second thought, Tommy asks, “How much is his fine?”
