The project schedule indicates what needs to be done, which resources must be utilized, and when the project is due. (1) An unrealistic Project Schedule will be a misrepresentation of reality.

Scheduling is the art of planning your activities to achieve your goals and priorities in your available time. When it’s done effectively, it helps you:
- Understand what you can realistically achieve with your time.
- Make sure you have enough time for essential tasks.
- Add contingency time for “the unexpected.”
- Avoid taking on more than you can handle.

A project schedule communicates what tasks need to get done and which organizational resources will be allocated to complete those tasks in what timeframe. A project schedule is a document collecting all the work needed to deliver the project on time. (2)

An unrealistic timeline for a change initiative does nothing to increase its speed. In reality, it can slow things down because it drastically lowers the ability of your organization to change successfully while it continues to operate. It can produce a faulty solution and lower morale. You can impede the potential success of your change efforts by creating timelines that do not reflect the actual work and capacity required for them to be implemented. (3)
