Mother speaks to me of love

A poem

Today the mother spoke to me
Of what it means to love
She spoke to me so kindly
As I sat high above

Her world of grass and flowers
Seeing the fresh-faced joy
And the passing by of hours
In the smile of a little boy

Chasing his young sister
Who ran away and laughed
I heard the mother whisper
Of love in moments soft

Like these. A simple fragment,
A shard of time forgotten:
Hot sun, a lake, stagnant
Dropped peach, rotten

Pungent. There’s a buzzing fly
Too hot to move, I sit.
And in my mind’s eye
I see, I smell, I feel it

Today, she says, that love is here
Mirrored in his smile, at last
That softest, forgotten moment near
Brought back from summers past

The mother’s words are gentle
As she shows me my love scenes
No consequence, just sentimental
These vignettes and dreams

Hold all you need to feel
As you walk along your path
Just stop and see what’s real
Like that little girl’s soft laugh.
