Murder Mystery in the Emergency Room (Part 1)
I definitely didn’t expect this when I woke up to go to work this morning
It was a cold Tuesday morning in Ilorin.
I had woken up at my usual time to get ready for work.
Today, I decided to wear my dark navy blue scrubs along with my ward coat. The surgical emergency was calm on some days, but on most days it was full of drama. Today was one of those days.
For most of the day, work was going well. Minor wounds here and there, one or two switches, nothing too crazy.
I was just about to take a little break to go get a soda, I was having a headache and I hadn’t eaten all day, I just needed glucose. I wish I took a soda break earlier, but thank God for the body’s ability to make glucose out of the little fat stores in my body, or I’d have become a patient myself.
The med student in her bright blue scrubs called out to me from the window:
‘Excuse me ma, it seems like an emergency is coming. It looks pretty serious.’
I quickly jumped up to see what was going on.
It happened so quickly.
The stretcher was dragged in and the patient was lying on the bed, not moving, clothes soaked with blood, an open wound on his face. The man looked young, he was probably in his twenties, but he was lying there unconscious?
I screamed out loud.
Ambu bag! Suction! Materials for an IV Line! Adrenaline! Normal saline!
There was a lot of running around to get the materials necessary to resuscitate the patient.
As this was going on another person entered the emergency room, actively bleeding from his arm. He seemed to know the patient on the bed and he kept asking if he was okay.
I asked this man, who was literally causing a biohazard in the emergency room.
Who are you?
‘I’m his roommate’, He replied.
What happened to this man?
A tall dark man, looking anxious, identified himself as the brother of the man lying down, responded:
Doctor we don’t know, we were just called that he was found on the floor with blood on his body. I think he got into a fight. Maybe with some thieves. Please save him doctor. Help us.
The roommate also spoke:
I heard him screaming from upstairs, I came and saw him on the floor bleeding. It seems like some people attacked him.
How did you get injured? Did you see the people who attacked him?
No ma I didn’t.
The senior resident, the interns, and I were examining the patient while the brother of the patient and his roommate were explaining the situation that didn’t seem to make any sense.
Policemen also entered the emergency room with many questions. Everything happened in less than 5 minutes. The emergency room was very chaotic.
We were yet to start resuscitating when we noticed that he had stopped breathing.
We checked for a pulse but we didn’t find any, listened to his heart sounds but they were silent, Oxygen saturation was dropping, his pupils were dilated. He was already dead before he was brought to the hospital.
Or so we thought.
We bowed our heads and were about to call a time of death when suddenly he started to move his head like he was struggling to breathe.
It was the weirdest thing ever.
Did he have a chance?
We were about to find out.
