The Future Starts in California by Global:SF

On November 14, 2023, I’ll be joined by four distinguished panelists at the Future Starts in California during the official APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in San Francisco.

What is APEC?

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a multilateral organization established in 1989 among 21 member economies in the Asia-Pacific region. Its primary goal is to foster economic growth, stability, and prosperity among its member economies. It encompasses a diverse range of countries and economic regions from Asia and the Pacific: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), Thailand, United States, and Vietnam. APEC’s approach to cooperation is non-binding and consensus-based.

APEC has made significant contributions to regional economic cooperation and trade liberalization, contributing to the growth of the Asia-Pacific region. It played a role in the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the reduction of trade barriers. However, challenges such as differing economic systems and political tensions among member economies have sometimes hindered progress on certain issues.

The United States last hosted the APEC annual summit in 2011. The 19th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 12–13, 2011.

This year, the APEC Leaders’ Summit will be hosted in San Francisco, California, November 11–17, 2023, under the theme of “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All.” It will bring delegates, thought leaders, and stakeholders together with world leaders to engage on global challenges, focusing on three overarching APEC 2023 policy priorities: Interconnected, Innovative, and Inclusive.

The 21 APEC Member Economies account for nearly 40 percent of the global population, nearly 50 percent of global trade, and more than 60 percent of U.S. goods exports. Additionally, these economies have made impressive direct investments in the United States, estimated at 1.7 trillion dollars, and employing 2.3 million American workers as of 2020. — APEC2023sf.org
