Since the beginning of February, my life has taken over and I have hardly had any time to write on Medium. Combined with publications taking awfully longet to publish and becoming even pickier than usual, I have not been able to publish my standard 3/4 times a week.

Despite these two setbacks, after four months on Medium I thought I would share with you all my best performing articles on Medium and how much they’ve made me. Don’t get excited, there’s no three or four figures here.

I’m really writing this in hope that this resonates well with people who are on the same level of writing as me, working a 9–5, just trying to climb the writing ladder and publish when they can. Secondly, I hope to give writers a more realistic view of what to expect writing on Medium and how much you can expect to earn if you put in the work.

I shall start with my highest earning and explain why I think each article did as well as they did.

My highest earning has made me a total of $14.04 and has 396 views so far. Was it curated? Indeed it was. Surprisingly, it was curated two weeks after it was published as many writers claim that distribution happens within two/three days or not at all. Well, this is very obviously not true.

Why It Did Well

The boost from Medium certainly helped, but I believe one of the reasons it did well is because it was a unique piece of work which included information such as why women crave more on their periods. Additionally, the article was presented very well and therefore made it an easy read.

My second highest earning has 283 views so far and has made a total of $11.26. I’m surprised that it wasn’t distributed but I think the reason for that is due to me referencing news channels.

Why It Did Well

Better Marketing took this piece which I’m still stoked about. Being published in bigger publications increase your chances of internal views and 63% of overall views were internal.

Upon some searching, no one has written about Dave Chappelle before on Medium. Finally, the title is a good clickbait title and is speaking on life lessons which is a very popular topic.

My third highest earning has 424 views and has made me $11.50 in total. I really enjoyed writing this piece and found my experience quite comical.

Why It Did Well

Remember the hype around News Break and its creator programme? Every seemed to be getting accepted apart from me! I knew there must be someone out there with the same bad luck, so I wrote about it.

The timing was also good with this article. People were getting rejection emails, or no emails at all, and a fair few other writers were finding out about News Break and also writing about it.

My fourth highest earning is made me $8.01 and has 248 views so far. I’m not sure why I wrote this article, it was just something that sprang to my mind one day.

Why It Did So Well

My fifth highest earning has made $8, 395 views so far and actually has more than 50 fans. I was writing on Vocal Media before I came to Medium, even though I saw Medium before Vocal Media. However, I was too scared to write for such a large platform at the time.

Why It Did So Well

Vocal Media is an up and coming platform. As not many Medium writers like it, I decided to write about my personal experience with it as I have had some good successes with it.

The timing that this was published was handy as I found many writers on Facebook were beginning to talk about the platform and I took it upon myself to address it. The title on this article is also very straight to the point and includes the question that many want to know. Is Vocal Media good, or not?

My sixth highest article has earned me $7.57 with 151 views. I’m glad I wrote this article as it gave me something to reflect on and also helped me set targets for the next upcoming months. I wrote an article for my second and third month and plan to do a six month update.

Why It Did So Well

I assume it’s because writers are nosey. Did she make three figures in her first month? Has she found something I haven’t? Secondly, it may because other writers were also in their first month and they were curious to see how I’m getting on.

So, there we have it. No three figures, no viral articles, just basic and honest writing from a basic and honest writer. A good handful of other articles have earned me $3-$8 per article but they aren’t really good performers so I won’t present them to you. I also have a handful of articles with more than 400 views but because of the external views it has decreased the amount made overall.

Please take note that curation is not all it is clued up to be. As you can see, I have seventy published articles in total and out of all the top performing ones only one was chosen for further distribution. I do have a good number of articles curated but they have only earned a few dollars.

Writing a lot is not easy and not do-able for me who works 9–5. Am I going to take the risk and quit my job to write? Hell no, but I admire people who do that. At the end of the day, I’m grateful to be earning and I do hope to earn an average of $300-$400 a month, but as you can see I have not hit that mark yet.

Onwards and upwards!
