Embarking on my journey as a computer science major at the University of Toronto, I find myself immersed in the vibrant world of STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. As a girl in a field traditionally dominated by men, my experience is distinctive, marked by both the challenges and opportunities that come with breaking gender barriers.

STEM, as a whole, is a driving force behind innovation, shaping the future of technology and problem-solving. The vast spectrum of skills, from coding to system design, captivates me, and I am eager to contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of the tech industry.

The University of Toronto, renowned for its academic excellence, provides an enriching environment for pursuing computer science. The curriculum delves into the core of technology, offering a comprehensive understanding of programming languages, data analysis, and complex system design. The challenges and opportunities that lie ahead are both thrilling and promising.

As a female majoring in computer science, I am aware of the gender gap that persists in STEM fields. Women constitute less than 35% of the STEM workforce in the United States, highlighting the need for greater representation. The journey ahead involves dismantling stereotypes, fostering interest among girls, and providing robust support systems for women in STEM. I am determined to be part of this change, challenging preconceptions and contributing to a more inclusive environment.

Yet, amidst these challenges lies an incredible opportunity to build a brighter, more equitable future. Inclusivity and equality in STEM are not only moral imperatives but also essential for driving innovation. Diverse perspectives are the catalysts for breakthroughs in technology and problem-solving. By actively promoting inclusivity, I hope to contribute to a more equitable STEM community, shaping a future where opportunities are accessible to all.

The benefits of pursuing a career in STEM are undeniable — from growth opportunities and competitive salaries to long-term job stability and the chance to make a positive impact on society. The demand for skilled professionals in these fields continues to rise, underscoring the importance of cultivating the necessary skills and qualifications to thrive in this competitive landscape.

My journey at the University of Toronto as a computer science major is a testament to my passion for science and technology. The challenges, especially the gender gap, are opportunities to advocate for change and create a more inclusive STEM community.

With dedication, hard work, and a commitment to inclusivity, I am confident in my ability to build a successful and rewarding career in STEM, contributing to the transformative advancements that lie ahead.
