The fundamental assumption behind belief of meritocracy is that the success of an individual does not depend on their circumstances and station in life at birth. Rather, it is the actions of the individual which determine the outcome of one’s life. Such an idea emerged in the industrial age when suddenly demand for labor exploded due to the growth and expansion of the industry. In ancient times, people were more rational and understood the inherent differences that existed between various people and groups. This does not necessarily mean that ancient people were more equal. Although, in some ways, they were egalitarian (e.g., hunter-gatherer/pastoral societies).
