Nearly All of My Income Goes to Therapy
Is therapy worth the costly price — and the stress that comes with affording it?
I’ll be the first to admit: Therapy has helped me tremendously. It has helped me stay calm (for the most part) under the everyday pressures of being a working parent, and it has helped me strengthen my relationships. But at what price?
I was looking over my household expenses the other day when I realized that nearly a quarter of my income goes to therapy. Granted, my insurance does not cover therapy, and therapy costs upwards of $200 for a single session in our metropolitan city. But it still doesn’t sit right with me.
These days, my seemingly insurmountable credit card debt has been causing me a lot of stress. Sure, I know my rising debt is partially due to inflation, but it’s hard to wrap my head around the significant amount of money I am spending toward therapy.
Yes, I love my therapist and feel a certain loyalty to him, but do the benefits really outweigh the steep cost? I’ve been toying with the idea of cutting back on our weekly sessions, and looking into group therapy and other more affordable options.
As I weigh the pros and cons of my therapy, at the very least, I have something to keep my mind occupied. And I suppose, considering…
