As president of Rockefeller Center, Inc., Nelson ordered the demolition of Diego Rivera’s “Man at the Crossroads” mural, arguing “the picture was obscene, and an offense to good taste.”

Rockefeller was elected governor of New York in 1958, serving four terms. He also ran for the Republican presidential nomination three times and finally served as vice president for President Gerald Ford.

He died of a heart attack in New York City on 01/26/1979.

During a speech, recounting his struggles with dyslexia, he said, “Don’t accept anyone’s verdict you are lazy, stupid, or retarded. You may very well be smarter than most other children your age.”
