I recently attended a debate whose topic was to what extent eBooks can replace printed books. There were a lot of conflicting views and opinions. The whole discussion made me wonder if we are capable of dealing with these and similar displacements of textual and other forms that arise as a result of the achievements that we are showered with every day and that jump out in front of us every day.

I don’t want to sound like “when I was growing up”, but the old principles were much clearer. The records relied on the relationship between the work and the reader, where the roles were clearly distinguished. Everything was on paper — black and white. Modern technologies have moved the definitions and boundaries of this clear relationship. Expand or narrow them — however you choose.

The Internet and other “new media” are the cause of rapid changes, which we are often not even aware of. Sometimes we don’t even manage to articulate them. The contents are many and varied, they change and rotate on conveyor belts accessible to everyone. What can be made very important today, can already disappear tomorrow without a trace of its existence.

Scientists claim that a person receives about 100 thousand words per day through the media — which is 23 words per second. This is the amount of information that our great-grandfather processed throughout the year. I wonder how much we can really devote and think about so much data. And to what extent does the development of technology bring pleasure to the individual during the day? Are we turning into beings who only superficially process data and stop thinking and feeling?

On the other hand — where can all this lead us in the end?
