Peer-to-peer marketing, also called p2p marketing, is word-of-mouth marketing that leverages the influence of a ‘peer’ to acquire new customers. A ‘peer’ can be a friend, a family member, or a close business associate, or just basically anyone whose opinion carries weight for a potential customer.

In peer-to-peer marketing, the potential customer listens to a peer’s recommendations as reviews, testimonials, or feedback and uses that as a green light or reference point to go ahead with buying the brand’s product or service.

A customer can sometimes even be referred to a brand by a peer in what’s known as ‘referral marketing’ programs. In these programs, the brand may offer a discount, a deal or some other positive benefit for a referral.
