Let nothing hold you back from what you truly desire. That was the message I took from the second chapter of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.

To whoever has a dream and is willing to go forth without backing out, this piece is for you.

Let nothing hold you back

Hill on page 16 stated, “Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat.”

That suggests to me that success requires the willingness to make sacrifices. Even if you have to cut ties with your old self, you can’t go back to that version of yourself. That will hold you back.

If you really want something, you don’t back down. Quitting is for sorry suckas. Don’t be like this.

Bad starts

Another insightful point Hill made was to “remember that all who succeed in life get off to a bad start, and pass through many heartbreaking struggles before they arrive.”

I think of many prominent athletes such as Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant and Tom Brady. Each one went through their share of heartbreak throughout their careers.

Kobe Bryant, for instance, had a slow start to his illustrious NBA career before achieving success. Tom Brady was the 199th pick in the 6th round. He backed up former Washington State alumni and NFL player Drew Bledsoe, before eventually taking his job.

Both players broke through the ceiling of their struggles to be all-time greats in their respective realms.

Breaking through to the other side

Hill added, “The turning point in the lives of those who succeed usually comes at the moment of some crisis, through which they are introduced to their other selves.”

Here’s one real-life example of this.

Let’s say someone experiences a series of bad breaks in their writing career like getting laid off from their dream job. They think it’s the end of the world.

In the circle of fortune, they come upon a better opportunity. Perhaps a job offer from a major newspaper company like the New York Times.

Conclusion

In conclusion, don’t let anything block you from your desired goal, even setbacks. There is always a blessing around the corner after the storm.
