“On the Psychology of the Unconscious”, originally published in 1916 by Carl Jung, is known as one of the best introductions to Jungian psychology, and to psychoanalysis generally. The essay gives a brief account of the theories of neurosis developed by both Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, explaining that both theories are contradictory yet complementary to each other, and are therefore incomplete.

Jung goes on to introduce some of his own ideas regarding the collective unconscious and the archetypes, at a time when he was still interested in integrating his work with that of his predecessors. The essay is collected along with “The Relations Between the Ego and the Unconscious”, within Volume 7 of his Collected Works, which is titled Two Essays on Analytical Psychology.

We proceed now with a simplified abridgement of the text.

By the way, I’m now publishing all of my book summaries under the publication Paraphilosophy. I’d really appreciate it if you could follow — it’s free. 😁
